Spectra of Southern Pulsars
We compare the spectral properties of the millisecond and slow pulsars detected in the Parkes 70 cm survey. The mean spectral index for the millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is –1.9±0.1 whereas the mean spectral index for the slow pulsars is a surprisingly steep –1.72±0.04. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicates that there is only a 72% probability that the two distributions differ. As a class, MSPs are ...
متن کاملHigh-precision Timing of Millisecond Pulsars and Precision Astrometry
We present the technique of long-term, high-precision timing of millisecond pulsars as applied to precision astrometry. We provide a tutorial on pulsars and pulsar timing, as well as up-to-date results of long-term timing observations of two millisecond pulsars, PSRs B1855+09 and B1937+21. We consider the feasibility of tying the extragalactic and optical reference frames to that deened by sola...
متن کاملGlitches in Southern Pulsars
Timing observations of 40 mostly young pulsars using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope between 1990 January and 1998 December are reported. In total, 20 previously unreported glitches and ten other glitches were detected in 11 pulsars. These included 12 glitches in PSR J1341−6220, corresponding to a glitch rate of 1.5 glitches per year. We also detected the largest known glitch, in PSR J1614−5047...
متن کاملPolarization observations of nine southern millisecond pulsars
Mean pulse profiles and polarization properties are presented for nine southern pulsars. The observations were made using the Parkes radio telescope at frequencies near 1330 MHz; three of the nine pulsars were also observed at 660 MHz. A very high degree of circular polarization was observed in PSR J1603−7202. Complex position angle variations which are not well described by the rotating-vector...
متن کاملPolarization Properties of Nine Southern Radio Pulsars
We report on radio polarimetry observations for nine southern pulsars. Six of the nine in the sample are young, with characteristic ages under 100 kyr and high spin-down luminosities. All six show a signiÐcant degree of linear polarization. We also conÐrm a previously noticed trend in which the degree of linear polarization increases with spin-down luminosity. Where possible, we have used the r...
